Tocker Automation Grant 2022

We are pleased to announce that the Tocker foundation has given us an automation grant this year that pays for us to migrate to a new library system called Apollo. This switch is taking place effective 11/9/2022. This grant not only pays for the migration to the new system but it pays for 5 entire years of using this system. We are so grateful to the Tocker foundation for helping our little library make this amazing change!

A little bit about the Tocker foundation, taken from their website.

"The Tocker Foundation was created in 1964 to implement the philanthropic interests of Phillip and Olive Tocker. Phillip Tocker was a practicing attorney, but changed careers in his later years when he purchased the Waco outdoor advertising plant and later expanded to own outdoor advertising plants throughout the United States. His vocational career culminated to the position of President of the Outdoor Advertising Association of America. After retiring to Austin Texas in 1973, Phillip and Olive Tocker actively pursued their avocations.

Phillip and Olive Tocker endowed the foundation with their estates in 1994 and 1993 respectively. After years of supporting a wide range of community-based causes, the foundation discovered a need in small, rural Texas libraries serving populations of 12,000 or less. In 1992 the foundation board decided to focus grant distributions in this way. The foundation partners with community libraries to meet the particular needs of the community."

Texas Book Festival Grant 2022

About

According to the Texas Book Festival's Mission and History webpage, "The Texas Book Festival (TBF) began with a simple purpose: to bring authors and readers together in a celebration of literature and literacy. Founded in 1995 by Laura Bush (a former librarian and then First Lady of Texas), Mary Margaret Farabee, and a dedicated group of volunteers, the TBF set out to honor Texas authors, promote the joys of reading, and benefit the state’s public libraries." Every year the Texas Book Festival helps numerous libraries all over the state of Texas. Their desire is to help spread literacy to as many people as they can and help support libraries.

In May of 2022, the Daingerfield Public Library assessed the collections in the library and determined that the kids picture book section was 95% made up of books that were published before 2000. As a public library we strive to keep our materials current within the last 20 years. With this in mind we realized that our library needed some help to get our collection current and updated.

We applied for the Texas Book Festival Collections Enhancement Grant, a grant of $2,500 devoted solely to enhancing one collection in the library. With our collections in mind we chose to devote this grant to updating our kids picture books. We are pleased to announce that we were chosen as one of the libraries to receive this grant! In the next few weeks the library will receive the funds and begin purchasing brand NEW kids picture books that have been published within the last 5 years. By the middle of October we hope to have all of the new books on the shelf and ready to be checked out.

Check out some of the new books we will be adding to our picture book collection from the funds received in the Texas Book Festival Grant.
